Following a contentious school closure process in Langley, it is likely their school trustee elections will be heated.

I came across this website:Petition to eliminate 2 Langley school trustee seats

A bit more digging, a la google, yielded this blog post by Susan Semonick which includes a link to the petition. The petition contact person is Susan.

The petition organizers are hoping to reduce the size of the Langley Board of Education from seven to five school trustees.

Langley is a similar size to Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows district. I believe both would actually qualify for an increase to nine trustees based on population.

One pitfall of a smaller board...more opportunity for a coalition to form the majority and limit the voices/influence/access of the minority.

Also, larger boards may more effectively reflect diversity within a community.

Just some thoughts and I am curious to hear other opinions on this.

New candidate...

From the press release:

Well-known Langley educator Wendy Johnson announced today that she will be seeking a seat on the Langley Board of Education in the upcoming November 15th municipal elections.

“Our school district is in dire need of positive, respectful, and democratic leadership”, said Johnson, Langley’s Woman of The Year in 2001 and a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for Community Service in 2002. “Children, families, and educators in Langley have endured three long and difficult years under the current majority on this School Board. They have seen it divide the district into competing zones, treat schools and their communities unfairly, and demonstrate arrogance and disdain when dealing with children and parents. It didn’t used to be this way. It doesn’t have to continue to be this way.”

School issues on many minds

The Langley Times, September 16, 2008

I’ve had numerous discussions with a wide variety of people over the past few weeks, and one of the top of mind topics for many of them has been the Langley Board of Education.

In particular, the election of seven trustees coming up on Nov. 15 is of high importance. I suspect a number of people who don’t usually vote will be trooping to the polls that day, because of their eagerness to vote for (or against) trustees. Five are elected in the Township; two in the City...

...In my view, the major issues are these. How will the board deal with enrolment which continues to decline in most areas, while at the same time climbing in Willoughby?

A second question is this: How will the board react to the change in our economy and better prepare students to take their place in the work force? Academic education is fine for some students, but there needs to be a significant emphasis on trades and other vocations that are more technical in nature.

A third question is this: What will the district do with its surplus properties? It has been reluctant to sell them, because of the possibility of future growth, but it seems quite clear that it won’t be able to use all of them....

Dueling endorsements...

From Janet Steffenhagen's blog Provincial pols endorse trustees

And a letter to the editor from the president of the Langley Teachers' Association...

Election: Common ground seems unsteady
Langley Advance, November 13, 2008

Dear Editor,

The common ground that teachers and parents share is a desire for schools to provide the best learning opportunities for children.

The Langley Teachers' Association once felt that all school trustees shared this concern; thus, until this municipal election we have never endorsed individual trustee candidates. However, our experiences over the past two years have led us to believe this is no longer the case. As a result, we surveyed our members to determine if we should take this step in this year's school board elections...
