Seven trustees form the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Board of Education. Two are elected in Pitt Meadows and five are elected in Maple Ridge.

In my experience, there have always been between 10 and 15 people vying for the five seats in Maple Ridge.

In Pitt Meadows, there have been as few as 3 citizens vying for two seats. I think the most has been four.

At least two seats in Maple Ridge (Trustee Stepan Vdovine has announced he will seek a nomination to Vancouver's Vision party as one of their school trustee candidates and the board chair isn't running again) and one seat in Pitt Meadows (vacated earlier this year) are wide open.

Quite a few people have already thrown their hats into the ring, including two former trustees who were defeated in previous elections.

I cannot recall this many people declaring this early in the past.

It is shaping up to be an interesting race.

Wow, where to start. First, if they hadn't turfed a trustee, Nel Joostema they'd still have another representative at least until November. This lady wanted to stay and complete her term of office but the Board Chair wanted her out and led a legal charge to make it so. Now this community has one that wanted to stay but was turfed out because she moved, and one who just up and quits with a very short time left to serve. What in the world? And now, no one is declaring?

Even here in Chilliwack, only two (if memory serves) trustees have declared themselves and no one new has come forward tossing their hat in the ring.

Maybe it's time to rethink these "Boards of Education."

Take ballot seriously, says DPAC

The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Times, October 03, 2008

A school board trustee should be open-minded, have an honest, respectful character, be enthusiastic and passionate about education, have experience in the public school system as a parent or volunteer and demonstrate interest in school board level issues -- these are the top characteristics identified in a recent survey by the District Parent Advisory Council.

Top issues identified in the survey included student achievement, services for students needing extra support, school safety, class size and parent involvement in school and district decision-making...

I'm not going around the province looking for these - everyone can check their own municipal website - but I live in this district, so here are the links for Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows candidate lists.

A total of 19 (!!) for seven school trustee positions.

In Maple Ridge 15 are fighting over five seats with only two incumbents running.

It is almost as crowded as the Maple Ridge council race, where 23 are fighting over six seats.

I am posting this here because it showed up on my google alert for school trustee elections and it is a bit different from the usual static election website.

There are so many possibilities to use new media effectively during an election campaign. In particular, I believe this is a great way to reach younger voters:

Publicly accessible facebook election campaign page for school trustee candidate Stepan Vdovine.
