JOHN TAYLOR GATTO: · THE PUBLIC SCHOOL NIGHTMARE
"It's important to note that the underlying premise of Prussian schooling is that the government is the true parent of children--the State is sovereign over the family. At the most extreme pole of this notion is the idea that biological parents are really the enemies of their own children, not to be trusted."

I just discovered (by accident) that the Novia Scotia Education ministry will give tuition support for LD students to attend private school. Check it out at http://tuitionsupport.ednet.ns.ca/index.shtml

No. We are doing what every parent has to do that has a LD kid in BC.

PAY!!!!

My daughter is going to the Learning Disabilities Association in Vernon for tutoring and will attend the only reasonably priced LD school in BC next year in Kelowna.

Thank goodness you've found something Michele. And I hear you on having to pay. Wouldn't it be great if someone who had their child in a private school who had to pay, decided to withhold their school tax portion from their municipal tax bill, or at least 50% of it, the 50% that wasn't being subsidized by the government.

Remember someone from our former list on TPON who always advocated a tax revolt by withholding our school taxes?

I'm not suggesting you do that Michele but maybe someone who could afford a lawyer for an extended period of time. It's not even the amount that would be withheld because I think if I remember correctly, it would amount to about $500 on my tax bill, but it's the principal of the thing.

At least the school receives some funding from the BC ministry of education. The Vedanta Academy website describes the different types of independent schools and how much funding is received. As a group 1 school, they are funded at 50% of local public school per student operating cost. As far as I know, they are also eligible for the low incidence targeted special education funding as well.

BCCPAC should allow membership for schools such as this that provides programs that are not in the public schools. Learning to read should be an essential right for all students. Parents who have to pay instead of their child receiving it free in the public school system need to have a parent voice at the provincial level as well.

I suppose 50% is better than nothing, but wouldn't it be nice if the government embraced this idea? Instead of expending a lot of time, energy and money fighting Rick Moore and his case, why not do what needs to be done and give the students what they need? As far as I've ever been aware, private schools don't ever get the high incidence funding. They only receive 50% of the regular per pupil amount.

Janet has just picked up this story at her blog (way to go Michele!) and has said that now the program may be in trouble, and yet the entire legislative committee has voted in support of this program. That fact alone is note worthy.

Did I say high incidence? I meant low incidence.

Ontario? No help for parent re: school choice whatsoever, and our current union-friendly provincial government, we're throwing money out the window, and closing schools but the bureaucracy is ballooning.

When school boards ignore the research that identifies how to teach virtually all children, they engage in abuse."
