I've been involved in special education for years. While I knew I wasn't up to speed on learning disabilities, I had no idea how much I had to learn.

In truth, the Moore decision was my impetus - the decision and its implications were almost beyond my comprehension. How could we abandon so many children by teaching reading in outdated and ineffective ways? The decision showed the way, all I had to do was follow it.

This has been a wonderful journey. The academic world is filled with research on reading. There are mountains of it, but little is connected to the world of our schools, and the children it supposedly serves.

This handbook is not written for those whose children are already diagnosed with a learning disability. Those parents know better than me how reading can be taught. Instead, Joyce and I have written a much more basic handbook - because we all need to understand, for the sake of all our children.

Our sincere thanks to Heather, for her expertise and her encouragement. We couldn't have done it without you!
