A press release for a candidate declaring for Abbotsford:
Seeking second term
Published: October 01, 2008 6:00 PM
School trustee Shirley Wilson is asking voters to grant her a second three-year term on the Abbotsford board. “I want to build on the commitments made in my first term, and see those improvements through,” Wilson said. “Also, physical education is a big issue right now, as the Ministry of Education says we need 30 minutes of activity for students each day.” Wilson cited reviews of the ESL program and ACE (Abbotsford Continuing Education) program as the highlights of her time in office. “These were critical reviews needed by the district. They were recommended by staff and we supported them and funded them.” Sixteen recommendations came out of the ACE review, which Wilson says involved extensive community consultation as well as hearing from provincial and federal officials. ACE will expand its offerings in trades and technology training in addition to offering a wider range of specialty courses. Perhaps the most notable decision is the planned relocation of the program to the former Bakerview Elementary building in 2009. “We also took an intensive look at ESL,” Wilson said. “We are improving our programming and focusing on our outcomes.” During Wilson’s term the board committed to funding ESL support for students beyond the five years provided by the provincial government. “We will fund them until they are able to operate properly in English,” Wilson said. Before entering local politics, Wilson’s background was in management, finance and independent consulting. As well as having two children attending middle school in the district, the incumbent trustee says she has a long record in public service. “I’ve worked with the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame, the skating club and several other boards. I’ve always been part of things to support youth and sports and the community.” Shirley Wilson 604-853-5576 Ancora Imparo ~ Michelangelo

Female politicos meet to discuss their journey
Marcia Downham, The Times, November 14, 2008
As the female candidates, running for mayor, council and school trustee in Abbotsford and Mission gathered for one last campaign hurrah, one thing was apparent - the empowerment of women, and having the courage to stand up for what they believe in.
Almost every woman candidate gathered, to speak about their journey in running for the municipal elections, and why they believe they are the right fit for the job, during a Business Professional Women's Club of Abbotsford-Mission luncheon Wednesday at the Cascade Community Church...
